Comparison of dinner habits in Italy and the USA, showing why some Americans eat dinner at 5pm.

I’ve been living in the US since 2010, and from the very beginning, I’ve wondered about something: when Americans eat dinner at 5pm, what do they do for the rest of the evening?

I’m Italian, and back home, 5pm is “merenda” time – a little snack with tea or something sweet, for kids and adults alike.

Of course, I know not all Americans eat dinner at 5pm, but for those who do, I’m genuinely curious about what the rest of the evening looks like!

So I want to ask directly: for those of you who eat early…what happens next? 😃

  • A) I’m done for the day, no more food
  • B) I have a snack later
  • C) I eat a second (lighter) dinner
  • D) It depends on the day
  • E) Something else

I know this isn’t true for everyone, but I’m genuinely curious – help me understand!

  1. I generally eat dinner between 5 and 6 PM when I’m home. At restaurants it’s between 6 and 8 PM, depending on who I’m with. After eating dinner at home, I immediately go to sleep. Just kidding. I usually don’t eat anything else after dinner. I relax and read or watch TV or work on my laptop.
